9th
International
Plant Gall Symposium

July 13-19, 2026

Waspexpos and Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca is proud to host the 9th International Plant Gall Symposium on July 13-19, 2026. The Where the wild rose galls grow multi-day event will include guest speakers, group activities, workshops, and much more. Hosted by Zoltán László (Associate Professor, Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca) this symposium will bring together visitors from around the world to the second symposium of this kind scheduled in Europe. Come and see where the wild rose galls grow in Transylvania, Romania!

Location

Cluj-Napoca is a dynamic academic and cultural hub, renowned for its vibrant atmosphere, historical architecture, and strong ties to scientific research. The city is home to Babeș-Bolyai University, one of Eastern Europe’s most prestigious institutions. The Alexandru Borza Botanical Garden, affiliated with the university, offers an ideal setting for botanical exploration. Spanning over 14 hectares, it features diverse plant collections, greenhouses, a Japanese garden, and sections dedicated to the flora of Romania. In July, the garden is in full bloom, providing a rich and inspiring backdrop for our discussions on plant galls.

The symposium will take place in the center of Cluj-Napoca, in the heart of Transylvania. The venue is located adjacent to the historic main building of Babeș-Bolyai University, a Neo-Renaissance edifice constructed between 1893 and 1902. Serving as the Rectorate and home to several faculties, the building reflects the university’s distinguished academic heritage. Just next to it lies the elegant Academic College Club, where the symposium sessions will be hosted.

The surrounding landscapes of the city are ideal for fieldwork, with abundant opportunities for gall collection. Explore Cluj-Napoca and the scenic Transylvanian region while enjoying engaging scientific sessions and cultural experiences. Travel and accommodation details for the symposium will be available soon.

His research combines phylogenetics, population genetics, and ecology to study gall evolution and community dynamics. With over 200 publications, he has made major contributions to gall biology, invasive species research, and pollinator ecology, positioning him as a key figure in evolutionary and ecological network science.
    • Csóka Gyuri is a leading Hungarian forest entomologist, internationally recognized for his research on oak gall wasps and plant–insect interactions. As a long-time researcher at Hungary’s Forest Research Institute and a doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, he has made significant contributions to understanding the ecology and population dynamics of oak gall-inducing insects. His work has positioned him as a central figure in gall research in Central Europe.

TRANSPORT INFORMATION

Cluj is very walkable and has a good public transport network. We recommend the TRANZY app for routes and timetables. You can pay with a credit card when you board or purchase bus tickets at a kiosk. A single ride costs 0.8 EUR cents. From the airport to the campus in the city center you may take line 5. You have to walk out from the terminal to the bus station on the street to the right.

You may also use the BOLT or Uber app for rideshares. From the airport to the campus in the city center it costs about 10 EUR. We recommend BOLT over Uber or taxi.

RESTAURANTS AND DINING

Around central Cluj daily specials and places with mains typically range from about 10 to 20 EUR.

Some favorite restaurants of the organizers: Maimuța Plângătore, Livada, Rhédey Café, Café Bulgakov, Colin’s Gastro Pub, and coffee shops: Nadiniere, Sisters, Frasca and many other more.
